Lafayette — The Everyday Day Trip
Lafayette is the most practical destination for day-trip purposes from Monticello. At approximately 30 miles south, it is close enough for a dinner run. A shopping trip, or an afternoon errand without committing to a full day away.
Purdue University in West Lafayette adds campus events, Big Ten athletic events. Arts programming, and the energy of a college town to the Lafayette day-trip package. The Purdue campus is itself worth a walk.
For dining variety, national retail chains, medical specialists. Costco and other big-box options, and services not available in Monticello, Lafayette is the practical solution that Monticello residents use regularly.
Indianapolis — The Full Day Option
Indianapolis at approximately 82 miles is a manageable full-day destination. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis — one of the largest in the world — is the top family draw. The Indianapolis Zoo, the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields.
And the historic Mass Ave and Fountain Square neighborhoods offer adult-focused day content.
Professional sports in Indianapolis include the Colts (NFL), Pacers (NBA), and Indianapolis Motor Speedway events. Lucas Oil Stadium and Gainbridge Fieldhouse both host major concerts and events throughout the year.
The drive via US-421 South is straightforward. Plan for approximately two hours of driving each way for a full day in Indianapolis. With the return driving against traffic common on Sunday evenings.
Chicago — The Big Trip
Chicago at approximately 100 miles northwest. About 1 hour 45 minutes on a clear day via US-421 North to I-65 North — is reachable as a day trip but works better as an overnight. The drive underestimates the time needed once you are navigating Chicago traffic and parking.
Chicago’s lakefront, world-class dining, the Art Institute, Millennium Park, Navy Pier, and major music venues are all compelling. Cubs games at Wrigley Field and White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field draw regular trips from Monticello residents.
For a day trip to Chicago, consider trains. The South Shore Line runs from Dyer or Hammond to downtown Chicago. Driving to a suburban train station eliminates city parking entirely.
Indiana Dunes and Lake Michigan
Indiana Dunes National Park and the Lake Michigan shoreline are approximately 80 miles northwest of Monticello. A legitimate day trip for beach access on Lake Michigan. The dunes provide both beach recreation and hiking through one of Indiana’s most scenic natural areas.
The towns of Michigan City and Chesterton near the dunes also offer dining, outlet shopping. And lakefront options that round out a day trip to the northwest Indiana Lake Michigan corridor.
